Blíží se Vánoce. Vážený rektor koleje sir Lancelot Spratt touží ze všeho nejvíc po klidu, ovšem klid je to jediné, čeho se v Nemocnici svatého Swithina nedostává. Mladí adepti medicíny možná nerozeznají játra od mozku, ale na koleji se pohybují až příliš sebevědomě. Jakmile se ozvou Lancelotovy kroky na chodbě, jejich dívky nalézají útočiště ve skříních. Pokud jsou dopadeny, hájí se tvrzením, že hledaly ambulanci, neb se o ně pokoušely mdloby. Jako by toho nebylo dost, odněkud z Čech přijede podezřelý vědec, kterého ani náhodou nezajímají zásluhy sira Lancelota, ale prapodivný výzkum kolegy, o jehož významu sir Lancelot silně pochybuje. A navíc lady Sprattová se proti jeho vůli na poslední chvíli rozhodne, že se zapojí do šílené akce „Dítě pod stromeček“. Pozve ke svátečnímu stolu jedno slušné děvčátko z chudé rodiny. Pověst této rodiny je však mírně řečeno pochybná, což ovšem sir Lancelot ani jeho ctnostná žena dosud netuší... Další z čtenářsky oblíbených příběhů sira Lancelota pochází z pera Richarda Gordona, jednoho z největších klasiků anglické humoristické literatury 20. století.
